One of the most important jobs that we have is helping customers select the next wine they want to make.  There are lots of ways to describe wines, like the flavour profile, level of oakiness or body.  Body is the one that I get asked about the most….so, what is meant when we say light or full body.  The best way I have heard it explained was to think of milk.

Skim or 1% milk – Light body

2% milk – Medium body

Homogenized 3.25% – Full Body

Cream – Port or Ice Wine

So, if you think about the way that different milks coat your tongue and taste…The heaver the milk, the more it stays on your tongue and fires your taste buds, so the flavour is more intense.  Wine is the same.  Consider this the next time you are reading descriptions of wine, hopefully it will help.

Limited Edition 2013

We are now taking pre-orders for Limited Edition wines.  If you have never tried any of our Limited Editions…this is the year to take the leap.  We have 5 great wines that are an incredible value at $189 when you make them in our winery (regular price would be $215).  All you need to do is pick 1, 2 or all of them, send us an e-mail, call or stop by to place your order.  You don’t pay for the wines until we send you an e-mail and let you know that they have arrived next January – April.

January has two wines from South Africa, a red & white.

The Shiraz Cabernet is our grape skin selection.  Fruit driven with black cherry jam, raspberry, spice and velvety tannins.

Sweetness:Dry   Body:Full   Alcohol:14.5%

The Viognier Chenin Blanc Roussanne is a dry white with crisp acidity and apricots, citrus, melons and pear on the palate.

Sweetness:Dry   Body:Medium  Alcohol:13%

February is bringing us Pacific Quartet for the 3rd time.  It is our most popular Limited Edition ever. It is a blend of 4 grapes from around the Pacific Rim.

Pacific Quartet is off-dry (1) with hints of apples, melon, lychee, rose petals and orange peel.

Sweetness:Off-Dry   Body:Medium-Full  Alcohol:11.5%

March is a Pinot Noir from the Williamette Valley in Oregon.

Oregon Pinot Noir has bright red fruit, with a meaty edge and a velvety mouth feel.

Sweetness:Dry   Body:Medium  Alcohol:13%

April finishes our Limited Editions with a bang…Washington Cabernet Merlot from Red Mountain, Washington State.

Washington Cabernet Merlot has aromas of blackberry, cherry and spice with sweet fruit and toasty oak on the palate.

Sweetness:Dry   Body:Medium-Full   Alcohol 13.5%

 Christmas Wine Deadlines

Here are some dates to mark on your calendar to make sure that you can get your wine bottled before we close for the holidays.

6 week wines must be started by November 9th

5 week wines must be started by November 16th

4 week wines must be started by November 23rd

Skin Is In

Diane, Amanda and I bottled the first batches of the new grape skin kits this week and we wanted to give you our impressions of them.  Overall, delicious for an economy 5 week kit.  There is not as much body as the 6 week grape skin kits, but that means they will mature earlier…if you hate to age your wine! If you are currently making 4 week red wines, these new grape skin kits will be fabulous.  The Australian Cabernet Sauvignon is my favourite right now, with a lovely dark chocolate and cherry flavour.  The Washington Merlot has those typical Merlot berry and jammy flavours.  The Australian Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre (GSM) has great body and lots of blackberry and black currant flavours.

If you are looking for a great value wine with intense flavours and body, any of these three would be winners for Christmas.  All of the World Vineyard wines are on sale until October 31st, including the new skins varieties.

Cool New Things

We have received some nifty new products in the last week including some new flags. Capabungas are silicone stoppers that allow you to lay your open bottle down in the fridge…we have four different designs.  We also got some kitchen towels and magnets with funny wine sayings on them….I have posted my favourite below 🙂

Jewellry Order

We also received a sample pair of wine glass earrings that we are going to take orders on.  I am wearing them every day in the store, if you are interested in seeing them in person.  They are super comfy and haven’t turned my ears red and sore, which is always important. They will be selling for $20.00 a pair when you pre-order…there are red wine, white wine, pink champagne and regular champagne.  I will be placing an order on October 29th and they will be in the store by the middle of November….think Christmas gifts! There are pictures below, but feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
